The nail bed is damp and moist, so it provides a protective place for the fungus to grow. This also makes reaching the fungus so it can become difficult to treat. Nail fungus mostly appear in the toenails because socks and shoes keep the toenails dark, warm, and moist.

Nails can become crumbly, break easily, and grow irregularly.

Fungal infections do not spread easily between people. Nail fungus grows more often in people with weaker immune systems. But nail infections can be avoided by keeping feet dry and avoiding constant moisture. Wear absorbent socks, Wear water proof sandals when in public showers.
