It lies just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The tube that carries urine runs through the prostate. The prostate contains cells that make some of the seminal fluid that protects and nourishes the sperm. The prostate keeps on growing as a boy grows to manhood. If male hormones go down, the prostate gland will not grow to full size or it will shrink.
As the cancer grows, it may ultimately squeeze the urethra then symptoms such as difficulty in urinating may occur. This is usually the first symptom of prostate cancer. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown. But it is known that the growth of cancer cells in the prostate, like is stimulated by male hormones, especially testosterone. Some doctors believe that prostate cancer begins with very small alteration in the size and shape of the prostate gland cells. These alterations are known as PIN (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia). These changes can be either normal or abnormal.
Compared with other types of cancer, prostate cancer is relatively slow growing. A man having prostate cancer may live for many years without ever having the cancer discovered. Many men with prostate cancer will not die from it but with it. Risks of developing prostate cancer increases with age. More than 70% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over 65 years of age.
